SPEC-TACK-U-LAR!

Image
We were the vagabonds last eve...dining at the spectacular Mister A's in Hillcrest ...a wonderful restaurant sitting on the 12th floor of a bank...with a wondrous view of the City... then off to the bar on the top of the Grand Hyatt for an after dinner cocktail...yup, this was on the 40th floor ...to say that I have conquered my fear of heights, well...I am getting there... then a pedicab ride down to the Gaslamp...and a chocolate martini...at the GSC ... top it off, with MY CLIPS beating up on the Kings of Sacramento...for OUR twelfth straight win...as the goof Cousins , didn't get out of the locker room for the 2nd half...coaches decision... Now, my son and I head on out to play golf at Sycuan ... Dang nice Xmas vacay so far, huh...

Poinsettia Bowl

Image
If you read Kirk Herbstreit's tweets , you'd a thunk last night's Poinsettia Bowl , here in SD, was a clunker ...he was right...just an awful display of ineptitude on the offensive side of the football... BYU won...as SDSU plays the game that was played 20 or 30 years ago...power, slow, and unimaginative... boring ...and you wouldn't have got it from the telecast, but it was cooooolllllddddd.... Yesterday's topic about the Bedford Boys ...I have got further in the book...shocking, senseless, waste of lives...the depiction of the landing on the beach of Normandy in the 2nd World War ...sacrificial lambs, so to speak...I can't think of a more insidious way of conquering the enemy...by piling up dead bodies and wearing down the Germans...the more I read, the more incensed I get... what a horrible period of time for the world... Rick Adelman's Timberwolves ...starring former Oregonian, Brian Love...and a collection of European stars...kind of a cool coll...

Bedford Boys

Image
I am reading this book about the history of the Bedford Boys ...nope, not a hoops, beisbol, or a football team...this tiny little city in Virginia ...where at the time of this story, the population was around 3200...you think I'm going to a "Hoosiers" type here, huh...nope...begins right after the Great Depression ...in the 30's...don't stop reading...where the boys from this tiny little town found a way to make extra money...by joining the National Guard ...and they would get a whopping $1 a day for marching every other week...and that was a whole lot of money way back then...and it became a big thing for those boys...they all did it...as the war in Europe was unfurling, and Pres Roosevelt kept preaching pacifism, the boys and their families felt very secure in their little world...if you are interested in this, get the book, or cheat by reading up on it on Google ... I thought I knew quite a bit about this time of our history...I have to keep studying, as I ha...

Good Show

Image
Yesterday I sarcastically talked about the Circus ...duh...today, I talk about the most entertaining team in the NBA ...who have a win streak of 9 or 10( it is 10)...and whupped everyone on the road...the last one was Detroit ...who was game...they do have some decent parts...who are coached by the legendary Lawrence Franks ...oops, back to sarcasm...reminds me of the manager...who seemingly never is a loss for finding a NBA job...he'd sink in the Collegiate Ranks...I digress...back to the Clips ...they play D, they contest shots, they take charges, they are deep, they run the floor (a lost art in basketball), and they DUNK the basketball.... OFTEN ... the Los Angeles Clippers ...and the most electrifying player?...the high flying act, Blake Griffin ... Just when I think that there couldn't be any worse situation in the NFL than the Circus , along comes the  pathetic team out of New York ...geez, you could take your pick this weekend...but, more often than not, the hapless J...

Circus

Image
The Smith and Turner Circus Show is in town...not that many people go to such an act anymore...it's here about 8 or 9 times a year...used to be a can't miss event...but it has become old, full of mistakes, and quite boring...people can't give away tickets to it...you have an act where the record is way below 50%, the coach is on the hot seat, and the interest is waning...wait, that's the opponent, the team from Carolina....eerily similar to this Circus ( the San Diego Chargers )...so how'd the show go...as predicted... the Circus was down 21-0... IN THE FIRST QUARTER ...so, to borrow the horrendous phrase, "It's not over 'til the fat lady sings" , well, she sang about 7 weeks ago...it's time for this circus to be shut down... Hold the phone!... the Lake Show has won 2 in a row...albeit, against the two worst teams in the league...but, they are wins...and, on the road, mind you... Survivor final...for all the good I have been saying...

Brad and Goliath

Image
Every once in a while a great story comes out of the woodworks...a bloke who just seems too good to be true ...like a Coach Kelly of the Ducks ...and yet, is what he seems...well...there is such a fella in this smallish university in Indiana...at Butler ...where his teams have repeatedly done the David and Goliath routine...huge underdogs, and beat the heavy favorite...a few years back he took the Bulldogs on a merry chase in the Big Dance ...to the final game...and his personal stock went way up...could have had most any job out there...nope...he started there as a volunteer and worked his way up the ladder to be the boss...and likes where he is... WELL ...he has done it again...everyone's number one, Indiana , came a prancing into hostile territory to play... Butler ...and Coach Brad Stevens did it again...knocked off Goliath...just a great feel good story, unless you are a Hoosier fanatic...maybe, the best team in the land is in Indiana... Staying in the hoops field... the...
