Prior to the Horse, taking you on a real jazzy ride of 'new to us' music...I heard this tune from the past...that boggled me mind...realized how groovy it really was...well, for sure, back then...the singer, Del Shannon, was a hitmaker in the Junior High days of me youth...we all sang and hummed his hits...'Runaway', 'Little Town Flirt', 'Keep Searchin', and the one that I recently 'ran' into...'Hats Off to Larry'....hmmm, is that big Larry, medium Larry, little Larry, or micro Larry?... an inside joke of us, as we knew a gaggle of Larrys all around us...we will not name names, to protect the innocent...of course, his other huge hit was 'Handy Man', since covered by James Taylor...yup, he was UNDER-RATED as a hit star...
Like so many other 'stars' of the era...his name was changed to Del Shannon...his real moniker was Charles Westover, from Grand Rapids, Michigan...born in 1934...his history was marked with name changes, band changes, and finally his one that stuck...a combo from a wrestling pseudonym in the area, Mark Shannon and his fav car, the Coupe De Ville...I guess combining de Ville, into Del...ha ha...thus, Del Shannon...
Had an odd time to become famous..right before the Beatles...61-63...was a hit himself in the UK...and actually, get this, released his version of theirs 'From Me to You' that got to our shores, BEFORE the Beatles real one did...
As time wore on, became a producer...see if you recognize some of his hits...Smith 'Baby It's You', Bryan Hyland 'Gypsy Woman'...then returned to singing...sadly, he ended his own life in 1990...a victim of depression and drugs...
