Horses For Courses
The blame game...goes hand and hand with winning and...losing...in the volatile world of sport...the boss is the coach...if successful, the smiley faces are everywhere...glad hands, and pats on the back...dazzling quotes appear as do recommendations from all over the place...then, the losses mount up...and the same people who were grinning at ya, are now looking away...small murmuring takes place whenever you appear...seem familiar?...
It's the life of a coach...and now...at any level of play...or, any sport...hey, you know it's that way when you get in the business...'don't get too high, or get too low'...sayings like that...however, you do it for the competition fix that's in your system...yes, when the ball is going in the hoop, or the ball is getting in the end zone, or...well, you get me drift...life seems so easy and wonderful...and at that point, all worthwhile...
Here's my personal take...I loved it cuz of the players I had on my teams...to help guide 'em for a couple of months or more...was great fun and rewarding...if we won, even better...if we lost, we worked as hard as we could to be successful...sure seemed like we worked HARDER when we couldn't win...and I was and am, severely cognizant of we and they...it was always 'we'...win or lose...
There are 'horses for courses'...a term used in the horse racing world...that some horses seem to like to run at different tracks better...or on turf, rather than on dirt...or on synthetic surfaces more than...OK, you get where I am going...the same is true for many coaches...some are better at different levels...
This is a long way of talking about the situation at Nebraska...over their football program...which not only dominates most discussions in their university, but in their state...as one alum told me 'it's the only thing we have in our state...sports wise...no pro teams, so the Huskers are us'...apparently, it's all about winning...
The school just fired their Athletic Director this past week...the reason?...the failure of the football program...as he was the one that hired the present coach, 3 years ago...odd way of dealing with the real issue at hand, I reckon....
Salary...in the past 2 decades the major difference in the coaching biz is money...collegiate football coaches make a lot more of it than ever before...and are the highest paid person on the faculty...way more than the school's prez...yup...D-1 types, kids...there in lies the rub...
If the school wants to terminate the coach, it will cost a LOT of cash to do so...where do they get this?...the alums who give it, who attend the games, and dictate who should be...the coach...
Egads, out of control?...maybe...listen, it's not unique to Nebraska...nope...most everywhere...and it has filtered on down to the beginning levels of play...and to all sports, male or female...win or else...
I always wondered this...when you are hired, all the happy faces were there to greet you...when you left, the same people mind you...had these evil stares pointed your way...nasty biz, kids...and if you go there, you probably will endure what I just said...hmmm...
In print...'we are totally supporting our coach'...the meaning?...the days are numbered...
Here's the difference...think not of those who throw darts, but of those who you went into the games with...they are the benefits of it all...did you love your job?...you bet...it was worth it, then...
And...
Just when I bad mouthed the extension of the contract of Clay Richard...he throws a gem at a playoff bound team, the DBacks...really, I know nuttin'...long live the Padres!...
I read an article that the NFL is going to move the Chargers back to San Diego...from LaLa Land, who is rejecting 'em...interesting, but fiction?...I suppose...
I still can't follow how the finals of the PGA Tour playoffs work...if he does this, then this other bloke moves up...and blah blah blah, I don't get it...
We are down to a name calling war with the North Korean foo and Prez T...seems about right...
The LA Rams beat the SF 49ers in Santa Clara...which is kinda close to SF...well, 45 minutes away...why not the Santa Clara 49ers?...anyway, an entertaining game...
Looks like Maria is gonna miss the mainland of the US...catching a break, finally...not so much for the Islands in it's path...
Got note that one of the alums of the old high school, North Salem...hit a home run for the Pads...Rocky Gale...don't know him, as we were gone while he was at NS...but always way cool to see a home town kid do well...
Just when everything was smooth sailing on the home front...our TV developed a glitch in the pix...like a white spot on the screen...estimate to fix? $400 to $600...so...we are getting a new one...I have had two Samsungs that have bit the dust since we have been here in the south land....the new one?...LG...like, life is good...
The headline out of the NY Post?...'Nobody Cares About The iPhone 8'...hmmm, they can't say that about the iPhone X...
Have you ever heard of this?...on your flight boarding pass, if it has 'SSSS' on it, you will be getting a special treat...it stands for 'Secondary Security Screening Selection'...yup, make sure you are wearing clean undies...
And...hoping for good weather...as we have them Beach Boys tomorrow eve out at Humphreys...rain or shine...the song for the day?...'All Summer Long' by them dudes...
