Collision Sport?

I can remember way back when...Bill Russell, the star center of the infamous Boston Celtics of yesteryear...turned analyst for the tube...made the statement that, 'football is a collision sport, basketball is a contact one...'...hmmm...so what defines beisbol?...a few years back, there was a monster of a collision at home plate...that took out the catcher of the San Francisco Giants...and one of the stars of the game...Buster Posey...for a complete season...enough was enough...and the powers to be eliminated the play at the plate...to protect the catcher...or did they?...

Last night in Chicago...the Pads were visiting, actually playing...and lo and behold...one of those situations arose...where there was a play at home plate...SD Catcher Austin Hedges, had the ball...inside the baseline as to give the runner a clear path to the plate...the runner, Cub 1B Anthony Rizzo, chose to run at the player, in lieu of staying in his path...replays show clearly him changing direction to do so...and clobbered the catcher...he was out, as Hedges held on...but Hedges was clearly HURT!...
see much diff?...

Chicago, in the aftermath, claimed 'great play'...the mgr was proud of Rizzo...Rizzo, in his post game talk...was nonchalant of it...said he talked to many umpires, and they said it was the thing to do...kind of a gray area...really?...the catcher has the ball, and his job is to dislodge it...times have changed Anthony...maybe...

The umpire ruled 'out!'...as Hedges rolled over on the ground...in pain...and taken out...no mention as to what extent...Rizzo was not thrown out...hey, here is the gray area, Cubs...really, all of beisbol...when do the opponents react?...especially if MLB does not?...fines or suspensions?...is this the time of retaliatory bean balls?...

The league has the day to ponder the play...what is the ruling?...let's see where the decision makers go with this...this could get mighty powerful...imagine the Padre team sleeping on this act of aggression...it may be a very nasty, nasty game today...
