Of course, the link between patriotism and giving thanks is the highest on this special day...
Memorial Day...for those who have given their lives for the survival of this country is this one...for my short life, the
World War 2, the Korean, the Viet Nam, the middle east, these wars were the most significant...my problems with the Viet Nam war had nothing to do with the soldiers...and now, with the ? of the Iraq war, it has nothing to do with the soldiers...they are just doing their job...and, I think
real well...
Celebrations...small towns do parades, families visit grave sites, DC shoots guns, the flag is waving, picnics....hot dogs, hamburgers,
Julian apple pies...me?

It's
horse racing...now, I'm not sure of the reason...but it just seems so American...the breeding, the jockeys, the owners...all seem so Native to me...back when, there was this
Native American jockey that we followed 'cuz he was from Warm Springs...a reservation in Central Oregon...that my
uncle Irving taught, I guess...who was racing in the big circuit...
Martinez "Peanuts" Heath...Irving always nicknamed his people...I was
rattlesnake Pete...anyhoo, he always raced somewhere on this day...how about that for a memory?
For a lot of
Americans, it is
baseball...one of the cool things the
Padres do...
EVERY SUNDAY...is to honor the service people(usually Marines)...by wearing
a camouflage jersey...and they are the only MLB that does so...and, they give tix to them...as they sit in the upper right field area...and the crowd, players, and umpires honor them with song and praise in the 3rd inning...it is truly a moving moment...mind you, it is
every Sunday, not just once a year...
And, I close with another happy tale...the
Padres win another series...this time against the
Nats...with a game winning hit by
Nick Hundley ...I know, again...
two games up and on top in the west...through May...in come the
Mets...for a 3 game set...
hoorah...
