No better example of golf in the past...on this Throwback Thursday...the driver of choice was made out of persimmon wood...not the metal ones used now...with so much technology and alterations, that it makes the game much different than when I started...back in the 50's...I would polish the driver, and keep it dry...and cherish it, no kidding...even tho I was a full fledged hack...the pride one had in their persimmon wood was immense...and I was like everyone else in this fashion...
I bring this up, as THE PGA tourney of tourneys starts today...actually, as I write...The Masters...it is the golfers super bowl...this is the one that they all want to win...and the purists just shake their collective heads (ah, how many do they have?)...as the golf courses have been overrun by the new fangled drivers, that 'shorten' the courses...and this one, too...
Many are calling for a 'deadened' golf ball, like they are doing to pro baseball this season...not needed, just start with a mandatory use of a wood driver...and it would be a done deal...by the way, who ya got for your winner this year?...the Horse is thinking perhaps, Jordan Spieth...wishing for a win by Lee Westwood...and figure it will be someone else...ha ha...
The mighty Padres lost game 3 vs them Giants...a rule change that I think stinks...when the game is tied, the extra innings START with a bloke (runner) on 2nd base...in the MLB rules guys eyes, speeds up the game...granted...but, why not let the natural and earned way take it's course, for 3 innings...and then go to the 'sudden death' method?...anyhoo, the Pads are 4-3 and are not taking the league by storm, as I was hoping...
Damn it all...another shooting, this time in South Carolina...killing a doctor, his wife, one other and 2 grand kids...named the killer as a former NFL player, Phillip Adams...why?...when will it end?...Prez B is calling for 'limited' gun control on taking them out of the hands of criminals...it is broader, but still not substantially strong enough for moi...I know we differ Chief, but I can't imagine why the common man needs a rapid fire gun or rifle...
Oh my, the nominations for the worst song...gosh, and this was in my time, too...the dreadful 'MacArthur Park' by Richard Harris...yes, kids, the actor...even written by Jimmy Webb...what was he thinking?...lordy, it was even covered by Donna Summer, in the disco era...the original was liked by disc jockeys throughout the land, as they had enough time to spin it, and go to the bathroom...it was 7 minutes and 21 seconds long...excruciating long...
Speaking of jockeys and throwbacks...there was this race, like Horse race, in 1923, where the jockey, Frank Hayes, actually died on the horse we was riding...and WON!...at Belmont Park, NY...
