Tin Cup

The Farmer's Insurance Open turned into the drama open...as Kyle Stanley, in search of his first PGA title...appeared to have it wrapped up for 71 holes...had a lead of 3...needed at most a double bogey to win the T...and the last is a par 5, which he had mastered all week...and, gulp, the unthinkable happened...massive drive, and then, to all the announcers glee, hit a lay up to use a half wedge for his 3rd...which he did...15 feet past the hole, that spun...and like a yo yo...right back off the green...dribbling oh so slowly and like in slow motion...into the pond in front of the green...naturally, he hit his next to the back of the green and just needed a two putt to still win...and...his first putt came to rest 4 feet away...and then pulled it left...geez, an 8...snowman...Tin Cup...

The drama continued...Brandt Snedeker thought it was all over, too....got wind of the debacle...and pranced out to the practice green...which at Torrey Pines, is oh so close to the 18th green...to unleash his putting, JUST IN CASE...boom...he needed his caddie and clubs...and all hell broke loose...off to the 18th and start a sudden death OT with Stanley...

Snedeker drove into the left bunker...Stanley a boomer, down the middle...Snedeker laid up, right by a pelt of a divot....Stanley a 3 wood to the back fringe...luckily, Snedeker was able to dislodge the divot without touching his ball, and knocked to 3 feet...Stanley a beut, to 3 feet...both made 'em...on the to the par 3 16th...Snedeker pops one over the green...BUT...wait, in lieu of being in the canyon and the match over...hits the TV tower and stops the ball...Stanley to middle of green...Snedeker gets a drop, pops it up to 10 feet and nails it...Stanley 3 putts and loses...

I think we have all been in the situation that Kyle Stanley was in...and it just fell apart...it is sport...high drama...and in golf, you are alone...you fail...sort of...he had a stupendous week and just fell short...too bad...BUT...the classiness of Brandt Snedeker...is above them all...he lamented about what Kyle went through...and was gracious about the win...especially as he has weathered two hip surgeries and thought his career may be over...believe me, at that course, he was tested...I'm proud of them both...
